Sub-Culture

A sub-culture that I belonged to in high school was preppy. It may be hard to believe, because now I dress like a bum half the time, but I used to be a prep. I used to think that clothes and things that can be purchased were the most important things in my life. I guess you become a prep when you realize that you aren't buying things at certain stores because it didn't have a "designer label" or wasn't that expensive. Or that all you think about is how you look and when you are going shopping next. The only things you notice are the clothes and accessories other people are wearing. I would say that there is some sort of "slang" language involved. I would refer to certain stores by their nicknames such as Hco for Hollister and Juicy for Juicy Couture. Once I was wearing a Juicy Couture Hoodie that has a J (their logo) on the zipper and someone came up to me and said "why do you have a J on your hoodie when your name starts with an A?." Clearly she had no idea that the J stood for the name of the designer/brand. Why was I obsessed with all these designer clothes? Probably because I would read all these magazines and see these clothing items on celebrities, which made me want them too. I'm pretty sure that is why all the girls that have these types of clothing have it, because they want to be like some famous celebrity. I guess I still like nice things, but after this little episode of mine, I learned to appreciate the value of a dollar. And realized how awesome Target is.

Blog Post #3 Sub-culture

For this post I want you to describe a sub-culture you belong to. This should come easily since we interviewed each other so I am expecting to really feel like I have learned something after I read your posts!

MES

My name is Meghan Eileen Stoll. My name is Irish. I never really liked my name and wanted it to be something different. When I was little I wanted my name to be Christine or Sarah. I do not mind it as much anymore. I just think it is such a common name and everyone has it. I have always hated my middle name the most. My sister always used to make fun of me about it. She would say, "get it I-lean." That would make me so upset. I would ask my mom to change it. She would say I would have named you Meghan Elizabeth but that is your sisters middle name. Thanks, so I get the dumb middle name. I have always felt strong about my last name though. This represents my heritage and where I came from. I have a huge family and most of them have the same last name as well. I think they are proud of it too.

Alexandra A. Hanpeter

Alexandra is a Greek name meaning 'Defender of Men', and is the feminine version of Alexander, though I've always gone by Alex. My parent's got my first name from my mother's grandfather, who was named Alexander. I've always liked my first name, and didn't mind that it was also a boys name. There was only one other Alex in my high school class, so while I was growing up, it was a unique name. After meeting a lot of Alex's at Columbia, I still feel my name is unique and wouldn't swap it for another name. My name has fit me at every stage of my life and I expect it to continue doing so.
Ann is a Hebrew name meaning graceful, which definatly does not describe me very well. I got the middle name 'Ann' from my Dad's mother, which always makes me feel bad about hating the name so much. It's one of those middle names that everyone has, and I've always wanted some weird middle name no one has ever heard of, or a longer middle name, so I could have a long-ass majestic full name.
Though I've never been able to find a meaning for my last name, I know that it is German,  because my Grandfather was born in Germany. I've always had mixed feelings about my last name. People often spell or say it wrong, some examples being 'Handpeter', 'Hampeter' and once even 'Hamster'. Though I can honestly say I've never met another Hanpeter outside of my family, I think I'd like to. I think finding another Hanpeter would be a monumental moment in my life. Or at least a cool couple of minutes.

my name.

My full name is Alexandra Ann Sequenz. It's always been Alex for short, and I will let no one, I mean no one, call me Alexandra. I tried it for a week but could not do it. When I was younger I didn't like my name, Alex, because my brother made fun of me and sometimes still does, by saying "well you have a boy name." It's a unisex name. The only thing that really made me like it was last summer I found this band called This Time Next Year and they're single is "Alex in Wonderland" which is a song about a girl who's pretty much a player and messes with boys and is now getting the consequences of it and it's just alot of bashing on her. There's a line in it too that's "Alex is a boy's name anyway." I saw them on my birthday last summer too and told them like I love your song. So that was definately a milestone in my name. There's also a band called Alexisonfire, which is really Alexis on fire, but I lie and like to think it's Alex is on fire. And for some reason there's so many guys in bands named Alex, so whenever I meet them I usually just point out that we have the same name, it's a great conversation starter.
Besides that, Alexandra is formally the feminine version of Alexander. In Greek it means "defender of mankind/protector of man." In Greek mythology Alexandra is the alternative name for Cassandra which means "she who entangles men." It's pretty much a greek mythological princess who turned down that Apollo guy, she was like being a tease to him though, and he got all mad and put like a curse on her so that no one would believe anything she says. The name's orgin is greek and english and russian and also czechoslovakian which I find cool because I'm part czech.
I never liked my middle name. Ann is too plain, however I'm glad my parents didn't give me a middle name that began with an "S." It's orgin is english and hebrew, which is interesting too because my grandfather was jewish. The meaning of the name is favored grace.
I like my last name, Sequenz. I cannot find anything about it though. We've always tried to find meanings but never came up with anything. It's funny too because I'm half mexican and when I tell people my last name they're usually like "yeah that makes sense mexican" but Sequenz is my dad's last name, not the mexican part of me. I know the name comes from Europe, I think more so Czechoslovakia that whole area. We never found anyone else in the United States with that last name, so I feel pretty special, it's definately unique.

kat.

The name Kelsey has several possible meanings. It was a surname before it was used as a first name, and as a surname, it was probably first given to those who lived in a region that bore this name, such as South Kelsey in Lincolnshire, England. As a given name, it is more popular for girls, but may occasionally be used for boys. It could be derived from the Old English given name Ceolsige meaning "ship victory." Alternatively it could be from a place name meaning "Cenel's island," from the Old English name Cenel (fierce) in combination with eg (island.) Kelsey may be a form of the German name Gelzer, which transformed into Kelsey because of American pronunciation. All this is cool to know but my mom chose it because she thought "Kelsey" was original -- not so much anymore..
My middle name Anne came from my grandmother's name Antoinette which is supposedly a french girl's name. My grandma was 100% Italian so I'm not sure about that one.
The name Taylor originates as an English occupational name from the surname, which stems from the Anglo-French “taillour” meaning “tailor.” It derives from the Old French “taillier” meaning “to cut.” This was a very popular occupation in the medieval times, so the name is very common.
I used www.wiki.name.com for my info. =]

And I thought I was a nobody...

Come to find out, there is more to my name than I had originally thought. I tried to figure out where to start in the search for the meaning and origin of my name and decided to start with the last names I know. There is Hawkins, which is my mothers maiden name and the last name I carried for 15 years, Lemay, my biological fathers last name, and Wood, my current last name that I received when I was adopted. I decided to start with Hawkins and work my way through. My grandpa always told me our last name was English and I learned that Hawkins is one of the most notable of the ancient Anglo-Saxon race and emerged as a notable English family name in the county of Kent, where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity. The last name Lemay is French for young boy or girl. And lastly, Wood is a Scottish and Irish surname that means "defend". After I found out these origins and meanings, I searched my first and middle names. My first name, Erin, is Irish and means "Ireland" and was originally given to the island by the Milesians after the goddess Ériu. My middle name, Haley, is Scandinavian and means "heroine". So I guess you can say that I am a heroine that defends Ireland? Lol.

Name

BRENTON

Gender: Masculine

Usage: English

From a surname which was derived from an English place name which meant "Bryni's town". Bryni was Old English name meaning "fire".

So apparently my first name isn't even a real word "Brenten" so i went with the closest word Brenton which everyone already misspells my name as already. So pretty much i guess my First name is a spin off of the translation of Fire town in old english, but no one really knows for sure.

Kelly

Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Ceallaigh ‘descendant of Ceallach’, an ancient Irish personal name, originally a byname meaning ‘bright-headed’, later understood as ‘frequenting churches’ (Irish ceall). There are several early Irish saints who bore this name. Kelly is now the most common of all Irish family names in Ireland.

Kelly is irish awesome. I didn't even know i am irish, sweet cool awesome now i know. Now i know that if i got to Ireland, i will have one of the most common of all irish family names ever in Ireland.

DILLON

"From the Welsh elements dy "great" and llanw "tide, flow". In Welsh mythology Dylan was a god of the sea, the son of Aranrhod. He was accidentally slain by his uncle Govannon.

Famous bearers include the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) and the American musician Bob Dylan (1941-), real name Robert Zimmerman, who took his stage surname from the poet's given name. Due to those two bearers, use of the name has spread outside of Wales in the last half of the 20th century. It received a further boost in popularity in the 1990s due to a character on the television series 'Beverly Hills 90210'."

Dilllon is an Irish origin family name. It derives its name from the Norman Family name "Leon", which means "of Lyon" or "of the lion". The meaning given to the name Dillon also moves ahead with meanings like "loyal" or "faithful". This name is very popular and common in the Meath and Westmeath counties of Ireland.

I had no idea that my name came from Ireland and meant Loyal. THAT IS COOL!  Schneider is a German name.

I thought my name was lame!

I thought David was such a boring name. Maybe not as common as other names but not something spectacular. I wasn't named after anyone in my family or anything like that. I know that my first name comes from many different languages and it has  some biblical factor. What I didn't know is that it means "Beloved". This just got awkward. I never really question people's love for me. I know that my family loves me and i know love is distilled into other things. I consider myself a "likable" person. I'm easy going but on the other hand everyone can have things they don't like about themselves. My middle name, Joseph, is like my first name in that it has biblical influences. There is no real meaning behind it. My last name was so surprising. I can't believe I never did this before. My last names comes from the name "Pero" which in spanish means the "Rock" of the church. It comes from the apostle Simon. The names is derives from a jewish name of the rock "Peres". This name was brought to Spain during the crusades and then brought to the Americas. This name was changed over time to the common name of Perez. My entire name has some type of religious implication. I don't consider myself religious but I respect what it stands for, and I have a new view on my names.

Pure Hedge...or is it?

For years, my mom has made fun of my last name, Privett, for being derived from the word "privet". A privet is cultivated mostly in European countries. It is a plant, usually an unruly hedge, that can grow to heights of 15 feet and be a substitute for a fence or property enclosure. Not only did my mom think it was hilarious that I, for one, was not even growing past five feet, but that my father also shared the name. Therefore, he was an unruly hedge by association. After their divorce, my mom returned to her Italian-rooted last name, Fontanetta. I always believed this name to be elegant, flowing from the tongue (as soon as you could get through saying it a first time). However, this assignment has completely changed my opinion.
My first name, Kaitlyn, is derived from Celtic/Gaelic language. It means "pure". I've done my share of impure things, but I always hold my name to be true in that I am pure of heart and mind. I try not to judge people before I know them and to enter and conflict I face unbiased. I push myself to do the right thing, even when I know it isn't always what I want. I also take pride in knowing Kaitlyn was never in the top 50 baby names, at least for the past 18 years. This shows a certain unique quality that I believe reflects itself in my quirky personality.
Finding out the true meaning of Privett was the greatest triumph in this short assignment. It's meaning is not andything related to plants, nor the topic of vegitation. It is of Welsh decent, and comes from the Middle English word "prou", best defined as "brave" or "valiant". I consider myself to face challenges head-on when they arise, but I was not completely rid of my mother's taunting for my short stature. Upon further reading about the name, I discovered my saving grace; "-et" or "-ot" are two commonly used suffixed in Welsh names. This brings my last name new meaning, because the suffixes translate into the word "small"! Originally, the name was a nickname, not a last name, that meant "someone small, but brave". No more ridicule for me! My name is dead-on!

Meaning behind a name

Originally when I heard I had to write about the origin of my name I thought, hey this would be easy considering I already knew a little bit about my name. But as I was doing research I realized I didn't find as much as I would have liked to. I go by Ninah, but my full name is Yoninah Snipes. Originally Nina means dove, but by adding the yo and h at the beginning and end, it makes it Little Dove in Hebrew. Yo with any name lets people know that the name is feminine. I was able to find the masculine form which is Jonah. Jonah was a prophet swallowed by a fish, as told in the old testament. He emerged from the fish alive three days later. I found it interesting that my name stems from that. Yoninah is a very rare female first name and a very rare surname. As far as my last name goes, Snipes evolved from Snape which came from England. There are two accounts of the Snipes in America. Somehow the name became Snipes after several generations. The second account of Snipe living in Barbados from 1632 into the 1700's. By 1669, in Barbados, the name finally evolved to Snipes.

Four Names

I officially think that my mom was on drugs when she decided what she wanted my name to be. My entire name is Sandi Florena Arlene Nowosielski. As I type that, I really enjoy that spell check is telling me that all of them are spelled wrong. But I've learned to live with it, that and the fact that I still have to spell my name slightly out loud when I write it, or else I’ll get confused. It's not that I’m stupid, but just image having to learn how to write all that when you were in kindergarten. It has taken a toll on my brain.

I spent a long time trying to find the origins and meanings of my names. I didn’t come up with as much as I wanted, but what I did find was interesting. Sandi comes from a Scandinavian personal name. Since that’s all I found for my original spelling, I looked up the traditional Sandy spelling. I found that it was a popular name in the 1950's. It was also a form of the name Alexandra, which in Greek was a Mycenaean epithet of the goddess Hera, and an alternate name of Cassandra. For my first middle name I found that Florena came from Flora, which was a Roman Mythological name. Flora, meaning “flower”, was the Roman goddess of flowers and spring (it is also the brand name of German body care products, nice right?). It was even harder for me to find information on my second middle name, Arlene. It is of Irish decent and means “promise”; it too was popular in the 50's. My last name was the biggest challenge. All I found was that it was originally of Polish origin and that there is a famous artist by the name of Jerzy Nowosielski. So that’s basically it. I guess it’s due to the fact that my name is pretty strange. But at least I can say I have skin care products named after me…or maybe I’ll just keep that to myself.

SMB

My full fame is Stephanie Michelle Boisvert. I am of French origin, but my names are not strictly French. Stephanie is a Greek name meaning "crown" or "crowned." In it's French translation it is simply the feminine form of Stephen. My middle name, Michelle, means "Who is like God" in Hebrew and it is the French feminine form of Michel.
It was more difficult to find a deep origin of my last name. It's direct French to English translation is Greenwood, Bois meaning wood, vert meaning green. I found a more in depth translation where green is defined as young and inexperienced, and wood meaning forest. This could mean my ancestors were forest dwellers. There are records that show that the French Boisvert family was first found in Normandy where they were anciently members of the aristocracy of that region. There are records of settlers from France with this surname throughout the 17th and 18th centuries in Quebec, Canada. I was excited to learn this because I do not know much about my ancestry, though I wish to. My more recent ancestors moved to the United States from Canada in the last century, so finding that connection from France to Canada was more reassuring. I hope to learn more about my roots and ancestors because it is such an important part of who I am and how I got here.

My name

First of all, I can't believe that I hadn't done this sooner on my free time. First I went to Ancestor search where I found that my first name Ashley is English and it is an increasingly popular name for girls, it is a transferred use of the surname which came from any of numerous places in England named in Old English with the elements æsc ash + leah wood, and apparently it was inspired by the work of a man named Anthony Ashley Cooper who was Earl of Shaftesbury. Then I typed in my last name Zych. Now I knew that it was shortened when my relatives came over to America from Poland because that is what my family told me. But just now I found out that my full last name is Zygmunt, which is actually the Polish version of the German last name Siegmond, confusing?, yes. Then I went to Behind the Name and typed in Ashley and it said from an English surname which was originally derived from a place name meaning "ash tree clearing" in Old English. Until the 1960s it was more commonly given to boys in the United States, but it is now most often used on girls. Last, I know of a handbag designer that has the same name as me. Her and her sister Tracy, design and sell handbags for quite a lot of money and apparently have been seen on the arms of many celebrities.

RESPECT

When i hear the the word Respect the first thing i think about is The aretha Franklin song R.E.S.P.E.C.T find out what it means to me lol but anyway I feel that respect is a very important thing that everyone should have towards one another. It means a whole lot, There are so many people in my life that i respect and one of them happens to be president Barak Obama, I actually met him like 2 years ago and it was before he was really known, he was running for senator and i met him at a parade. The way he just talks about things and carries himself, makes you really look up to him and i really respect the fact that he cares so much about our country and wants to help create change for people and i have so much repect for a person that is just trying to make a difference and just like obama said which is one of my favorite quotes he said is " We may not get there in a year and maybe not even in one term but we as a people will get there". He is a very phenominal man and deserves respect i mean he is Our President.

RESPECT

Photobucket

If there was one person in this world that I can easily say I respect, it would have to be Tyrone Biggums. He was once addicted to the drug crack cocaine, but with the help of friends and family, he managed to cure his addiction. Many times people said he could not do it, they said it was impossible, they said crack was too addicting for one to quit, but he did it. The road to success was not easy though, Tyrone went through several stages of intense therapy. He had to visit the arizona rehab institute two times before he was cured. The first time he was caught smuggling in and selling crack to his fellow residents enrolled in the rehab program. The institute was demoralized but would not give up on this soul. After becoming clean, Tyrone now visits schools to warn kids about the dangers of crack cocaine addiction. This was a long hard process for Tyrone and this is why I respect him.

Respect

When I heard we had to write about respect the first thing that came to mind was how do I sign up for this blog thing its a lot of work and I don’t understand this new fangled technology stuff. But then it hit me like a chair hitting the stage wall on the set of The Steve Wilkos Show, Steve Wilkos. Who can you respect more than a man that was a police officer for 12 years aswell as a marine, then became a security guard on The Jerry Springer show, and then NBC realized that he was so awesome they should give him his own TV show so he can obliterate peoples lives. I chose him because he can take the most twisted child or dead-beat dad and turn them into an outstanding citizen in society in less than 60 minutes. It would take me years to do that to one person and sometimes he will do it to a whole family. Don’t get my wrong sometimes it does take him longer and there is a two part episode, but most of the time he can pierce there soul with his eyes in less than ten seconds. Trust me, I have been there I have been to over 12 episodes front row and when he walks out onto that stage they get security out but only for the crowd to protect them from Steve Wilkos. If you are not familiar with Steve Wilkos I have will post a link with a short clip from YouTube of one of his shows.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUDVal2rBtM&feature=related

I hope you all will learn to respect Steve becuase if you dont... well lets not go there.

Brenten Kelly

Respect

Thinking of someone I respect, did not come hard for me. My mother is the most intelligent, kind hearted person I have ever met in my life. She cares for others so much. She volunteers and works at a poor school as a teacher. She always takes care of my siblings and I. She would drive us to our friends house and help us with our homework. She always is sacrificing things she would like to do for us. She is so giving and donates money to her school all the time. I would do anything for her to repay her for what she has done for us. She is truly my hero, I love her.

Meghan Stoll

respect

I know everyone has already talked about how hard it is for them to choose just one person they respect most but I must say I really did find this to be quite difficult. In the end though, I have to say that I respect my dad more than anyone I know. I was a rebellious teen brat, but that never stopped him from loving me. My parents divorced when I was very young and I cannot think of one time he ever cancelled plans with me and my little brother. He has always been there for us, unconditionally. He has taught me so many life lessons and helped me mature into a functional adult. Not only do I respect him but I also admire his work ethic and parenting skills. He started his own business a few years ago and has become very successful. The business started from scratch and my dad has made it flourish. This was not handed to him. He has taken maybe a week off of work in total since he began. He gets up every morning at 5 am to be at work by 6 everyday. He stays at the office until 4:30 pm and gets a lot done. I worked for him over Christmas break so I know first hand how much effort he puts into his business. When he's finally home at 5, he makes dinner (which is usually delicious btw) and tries to make as much time for his family as possible. Before I went away to college I was never really comfortable talking to him about personal things but all that has changed since I moved out. I now consider him one of my best friends. I can tell him anything and he always has helpful advise. I respect him so much and all he has done with his life and with mine.

respect

The person I respect the most would be my older brother Jimmy. Even though he's only two and a half years older than me sometimes I think we're twins. We finish each other's sentences, know what the other one's thinking, have the same interest in music and clothes, and are still really opposite. He takes the time to actually be a big brother, he watches my back and even though I get annoyed I understand why. I make him go to shows with me and even then he's usually willing to go it's nice to know that I'll always have someone; and like typical brother/sister he's always making sure I'm okay and I make sure he's okay. He's a student at UW-Milwaukee and is in his third year of their architecture program, one of the hardest and most time consuming majors. He's always been such a hard worker in school and has always tried to motivate me to be the same. He stays up all night working on projects and still gets up to go to class.
He cares about the family and does so much for our parents. He takes the time out of his weekend to go home and help out my mom and dad, he's the typical boy of the family goes out and shovels snow, cuts the grass, and takes stress off my mom by taking our dad to his doctor appointments; and of course he never leaves without saying hi to the cats. He has such a caring attitude, he knows how to cook so he'll make dinner when we're at home, he's clean and takes care of himself, he's just an overall good person. He puts other people first and is so responsible. He's never had to go through as many health problems as me when we were younger but I always remember that he was there and playing as kids he would always make sure that I didn't do anything stupid to get hurt. He always helped me through those tough times. Even two years ago when I had jaw surgery and couldn't talk, but that's all that I wanted to do, he was there and somehow he still understood me. He grew up fast and I respect him for that.
He has so much grace under pressure something that I really admire about him. Even though he complains all the time too and questions everything and is so indecisive, he eventually makes everything work in the end, of course with a little advice from me. He's my favorite person, I always said that if as long as I have him in my life it's good. Although his attitude does come across quite strong and for the most part he frowns on alot of my decisions I know he does it because he cares.
