Meaning behind a name
Originally when I heard I had to write about the origin of my name I thought, hey this would be easy considering I already knew a little bit about my name. But as I was doing research I realized I didn't find as much as I would have liked to. I go by Ninah, but my full name is Yoninah Snipes. Originally Nina means dove, but by adding the yo and h at the beginning and end, it makes it Little Dove in Hebrew. Yo with any name lets people know that the name is feminine. I was able to find the masculine form which is Jonah. Jonah was a prophet swallowed by a fish, as told in the old testament. He emerged from the fish alive three days later. I found it interesting that my name stems from that. Yoninah is a very rare female first name and a very rare surname. As far as my last name goes, Snipes evolved from Snape which came from England. There are two accounts of the Snipes in America. Somehow the name became Snipes after several generations. The second account of Snipe living in Barbados from 1632 into the 1700's. By 1669, in Barbados, the name finally evolved to Snipes.
