Sub-Culture

A sub-culture that I belonged to in high school was preppy. It may be hard to believe, because now I dress like a bum half the time, but I used to be a prep. I used to think that clothes and things that can be purchased were the most important things in my life. I guess you become a prep when you realize that you aren't buying things at certain stores because it didn't have a "designer label" or wasn't that expensive. Or that all you think about is how you look and when you are going shopping next. The only things you notice are the clothes and accessories other people are wearing. I would say that there is some sort of "slang" language involved. I would refer to certain stores by their nicknames such as Hco for Hollister and Juicy for Juicy Couture. Once I was wearing a Juicy Couture Hoodie that has a J (their logo) on the zipper and someone came up to me and said "why do you have a J on your hoodie when your name starts with an A?." Clearly she had no idea that the J stood for the name of the designer/brand. Why was I obsessed with all these designer clothes? Probably because I would read all these magazines and see these clothing items on celebrities, which made me want them too. I'm pretty sure that is why all the girls that have these types of clothing have it, because they want to be like some famous celebrity. I guess I still like nice things, but after this little episode of mine, I learned to appreciate the value of a dollar. And realized how awesome Target is.
